What is Haj?

In Mecca, which is today a part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, stands the Kaaba. The Kaaba is an enormous cube-shaped monument containing a sacred black stone covered in gold-edged black silk. It is for the followers of Islam the ‘House of God’. Prophet Abraham, long considered to be the forefather of the Christians and the Muslims (Ibrahim to them), is credited with having built the Kaaba in Mecca with his son Ishmael, as early as 2000 BCE as he wanted to promote the concept of worshipping a single God. Among the descendents of Ishmael, who is recognized as being the ancestor of the Arabs, was Prophet Muhammad the founder of Islam. He designated Mecca as the holy city of Islam and the Kaaba, the direction towards which they would pray. A pilgrimage to Mecca was also ordained as one of the five pillars of Islam that needed to be performed by all true devotees according to certain rites laid down by him. So every Muslim is expected to make at least one trip to Mecca in his lifetime, ideally during the last month of the Islamic calendar. This pilgrimage is known as Haj, and one who has been on the Haj is a Hajji.
